Discover the plant
‘Brown Sugar Premium’ Pompon Dahlia (Dahlia) is a remarkable tuberous perennial distinguished by its perfectly spherical flowers in rich shades of coppery orange and reddish-brown. Its short, curved, and tightly imbricated petals form a dense and regular texture, beautifully highlighted by dark green foliage. From July to October, flowering is generously renewed on plants that can reach approximately 110 cm (43 in) in height. This variety brings warmth, depth, and sophistication to summer arrangements. Not hardy in Quebec, it must be overwintered in a frost-free environment.
Plant the tuber in spring, when all risk of frost has passed, about 10 cm (4 in) deep in rich, loose, compost-enriched, and perfectly drained soil. Choose a well-ventilated location receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, then space plants 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in) apart. Water lightly until shoots appear, then regularly to keep the soil moist without waterlogging it. Pinch young stems to encourage branching and apply a potassium-rich fertilizer as soon as buds form. Dig up the tuber after a light frost and store it in a cool, dry, and frost-free place.
The ‘Brown Sugar Premium’ dahlia is ideal for sunny borders, warm-colored beds, large containers, and cut flower gardens. Combine it with salvias, rudbeckias, echinaceas, Verbena bonariensis, and ornamental grasses to create warm and well-structured scenes. Its long stems bear excellent cut flowers, particularly sought after for bouquets with autumnal accents and their remarkable vase life. The flowers also attract various pollinators during the growing season. Regular harvesting and removal of spent flowers prolong flowering until the first frosts.
