Discover the plant
Pompon Dahlia ‘Wizard of Oz’ (Dahlia) charms with its perfectly spherical, soft, and luminous pink flowers. Their short, delicately curved petals, arranged with great regularity, create a tight texture that highlights the variety’s characteristic pompon shape. The dark green, dense, and slightly glossy foliage forms an elegant contrast with the softness of the flowers. Reaching approximately 80 cm (31 in) in height, this tender perennial offers generous blooms from July until the first frosts. Its romantic appeal brings refinement, brightness, and poetry to summer arrangements. Not hardy in Quebec, it must be overwintered in a frost-free location.
Plant the tuber in spring, once all risk of frost has passed, in a full sun location receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Choose rich, loose, and perfectly drained soil, ideally enriched with compost or organic matter. Bury the tuber about 10 cm (4 in) deep, with the eyes facing upwards, then water lightly until the first shoots appear. Afterward, maintain regular moisture without waterlogging the soil. Pinching young shoots encourages a branched and floriferous plant, while removing faded flowers prolongs blooming. In the fall, dig up and store the tubers in a cool, dry place.
The ‘Wizard of Oz’ pompon dahlia is wonderfully suited for borders, pastel flowerbeds, perennial beds, large containers, and cut flower gardens. Its delicate pink harmonizes with gypsophila, white cosmos, gaura, salvias, and ornamental grasses to create soft and balanced scenes. Its long stems bear flowers with excellent vase life, particularly sought after for romantic bouquets, refined arrangements, and wedding compositions. They also attract pollinators during the growing season. The petals can be used as an edible decoration when they come from untreated plants, adding an elegant touch to summer presentations.
