Discover the plant
Liatris 'Butterfly Frenzy' (Liatris) forms an elegant clump of fine, dense green foliage, topped with long purple and white flower spikes. The flowers open progressively from top to bottom between July and September, extending the decorative effect and adding a lot of airiness to plantings. Its upright, straight habit, reaching about 90 cm (35 in) in height, structures flowerbeds without making them feel heavy. Hardy down to zone 3, this reliable perennial returns faithfully every spring and is perfectly suited to Quebec's climate. Its graceful bloom brings color, movement, and a natural feel to summer landscapes.
Plant the corms from March to May, about 8 cm (3 in) deep and spaced 13 cm (5 in) apart, in a full sun location. Liatris 'Butterfly Frenzy' prefers rich, light, slightly acidic to neutral, and perfectly drained soil, as stagnant moisture can cause the corms to rot. Water regularly during the first season to promote good root establishment, then reduce watering once the plants are well established, as they will then tolerate dry periods. An addition of compost in spring is usually sufficient. Divide clumps every three to five years to maintain their vigor and bloom.
Liatris 'Butterfly Frenzy' is ideal for pollinator gardens, flowerbeds, wildflower meadows, and naturalistic designs. Its vertical spikes pair harmoniously with echinaceas, rudbeckias, monardas, goldenrods, and ornamental grasses. Rich in nectar, the flowers attract butterflies, bees, and many other beneficial insects throughout the summer. The stems also have excellent vase life, whether fresh or dried. After flowering, they can be cut back or left in place to provide a food source for birds and extend garden interest into winter.
