Hosta ‘Firn Line’ (Hosta). ‘Firn Line’ Hosta forms a compact mound with remarkable foliage. Each oval leaf features a blue-green center surrounded by a wide cream margin that progressively whitens throughout the season. The plant reaches approximately 55 cm (22 in) with its scapes and spreads to about 30 cm (12 in) according to the Van Noort sheet. In summer, pale pink to lavender flowers rise above the variegated foliage. This perennial from the Asparagaceae family brings light to shaded areas, under shrubs, or along a sheltered path, where its bright margins remain highly visible without exposure to scorching sun.

Plant No. 1 plants in spring in fertile, humus-rich, fresh, and well-drained soil, covering the crown with about 2.5 cm (0.98 in) of soil. Choose bright partial shade or open shade, protected from direct afternoon sun and drying winds. Space plants about 45 cm (18 in) apart to allow the clumps to develop and maintain good air circulation. Water deeply after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist during rooting and dry periods, without allowing water to stagnate around the roots. Organic mulch retains moisture but should remain slightly away from the center.

In spring, remove debris before new shoots emerge and add a thin layer of compost. Monitor for slugs and snails as soon as leaves unfold; collect them or use appropriate physical barriers. Cut back faded flower scapes if you do not wish to keep the seed pods, then allow the foliage to nourish the crown until it yellows in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps in spring or late summer. Pair ‘Firn Line’ with ferns, heucheras, astilbes, and shade-loving sedges. Hosta contains saponins toxic to dogs and cats; prevent ingestion.
