Hosta ‘White Feather’ (Hosta). Hosta ‘White Feather’ (Hosta) is sought after for its almost creamy white spring foliage. The upright leaves emerge very pale, then gradually develop green veins before becoming greener as the summer progresses; this evolution is normal and allows the plant to produce more chlorophyll. The clump reaches about 35 cm (14 in) in height and 30 cm (12 in) in spread according to Van Noort. In summer, pink to purplish-lavender flowers rise above the foliage. Its bright appearance is suitable for very shady borders, landscaped undergrowth, and containers sheltered from direct sun.
Plant plant No1 in spring in fertile, humus-rich, fresh, well-drained soil, covering the crown by about 2.5 cm (0.98 in). Choose partial to open shade, ideally exposed to soft morning light only. Young leaves lacking chlorophyll burn easily; absolutely avoid direct afternoon sun. Space plants about 60 cm (24 in) apart to maintain good air circulation. Water deeply after planting, then keep the soil uniformly moist during rooting and dry periods, without stagnant water. An organic mulch limits evaporation, but should remain slightly away from new shoots.
In spring, remove debris before white tips emerge and add a thin layer of compost. Watch for slugs and snails as soon as leaves unfold; damage is particularly visible on pale tissues. Do not attempt to prevent summer greening, which is natural and necessary for vigor. Cut spent flower stalks, then let the leaves nourish the crown until they yellow in the fall. Divide clumps in spring or late summer. Hosta contains saponins toxic to dogs and cats; prevent ingestion and remove cut debris.
