Planting 'German Butterball' potatoes
When to plant
March to April , as soon as the ground reaches 8-10°C and there is no longer any risk of frost.
Field method
1Prepare the soil by loosening it and incorporating compost or well-rotted manure.
2Plant the tubers 10 cm deep , with the sprouts facing upwards.
3Space each plant 30 cm apart , in rows spaced 70 cm apart.
4Cover with soil and water lightly.
Buttage
When the plants reach 20-25 cm in height , mound the soil around the stems to protect the tubers from light and prevent them from turning green . Repeat this once or twice during the season.
Growing in pots or grow bags
1Choose a large container (minimum 40 cm deep).
2Plant the tubers in 15 cm of potting soil, then cover.
3Add potting soil gradually as the plant grows.
4Water regularly without soaking the soil.
Tip : Well-drained soil and crop rotation prevent diseases like mildew and scab.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest : 110 to 130 days after planting , when the foliage begins to yellow and dry.
Let the potatoes dry for a few hours on the ground before storing them.
Storage : Keep them in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place to prolong their shelf life.
