‘Crimson Cherry’ rhubarb (Rheum × hybridum) brings the contrast of red stalks and large green leaves to the vegetable garden. Its location should be chosen for several seasons: keep clear access around the clump for easy harvesting and soil maintenance. The stalks are suitable for compotes, pies, and crumbles once the plant is well established. You can reserve a distinct corner for this rhubarb, separate from crops that you move each year. A durable label will also help you identify the variety when the foliage disappears for winter, before new shoots return in spring.

Plant rhubarb in a sunny spot with fertile, deep, well-drained soil that can maintain consistent moisture. Prepare the site by removing perennial weeds and incorporating mature compost. Place the crown near the surface, with its buds at ground level, without burying them under a thick layer of soil. Water after planting and monitor for dryness during establishment. Keep a clear area around the base to limit competition. Mulch helps retain moisture, but leave the heart of the clump free to avoid persistent dampness against the buds.

Allow the plant to establish without harvesting during its first season. The following year, take only a few stalks from a vigorous clump, then gradually increase harvesting in subsequent seasons without stripping the plant. Remove flower stalks if they appear and continue necessary watering during dry periods. Only the stalks are used in cooking: cut and discard the leaves, which are not edible. After the foliage dies back in autumn, clear debris around the base without damaging the buds. In spring, adding compost around the clump supports regrowth while gradually improving soil structure.
