Planting and growing rhubarb

A long term project

When and where to plant
Plant in spring or fall , in rich, well-drained soil.
Choose a location in full sun , to ensure optimal growth.
Respect a spacing of 60 cm (24") between each plant , rhubarb needs space to flourish well.

How to plant
1Dig a hole about 15cm (6") deep .
2Install the rhubarb crown with the buds facing upwards.
3Cover lightly with soil and water generously after planting.
4Apply mulch to retain moisture and limit weed growth.

Maintenance
Water regularly , especially during periods of drought.
Remove flower stalks as soon as they appear to encourage stem growth.
Do not harvest before the second year , then gradually in the following years.
Prune dead leaves in autumn and enrich the soil with compost.

Harvesting and storing rhubarb

1st year : Do not harvest , let the plant establish itself.
2nd year : Harvest only a few stems , in moderation.
3rd year and beyond : Harvest generously from May to October .

Harvesting method
Do not cut the stems! Pull them firmly downwards and twist to detach them at the base.
Never harvest more than of the stems at one time , to preserve the vigor of the plant.
