An Elegant and Unique Ornamental Gourd

Seeds of Ornamental Gourd 'Speckled Swan' (Lagenaria siceraria) , offered by the seed company OSC.

The 'Speckled Swan' gourd is a spectacular ornamental gourd, prized for its elegant shape and distinctive speckled pattern. Ideal for decorating, it can be used fresh or dried for a variety of craft projects. It is easy to grow, and thrives in full sun in well-drained soil.

Spread : 2-3 m
Plant height : 15-30 cm
Companion plants : Corn, climbing beans, nasturtiums
Enemy plants : Other squashes too close (risk of competition)

Cultivation method:

Sow directly into the open ground from late May to June , when the soil is well warmed. Plant 2.5 cm deep , in groups of 4 to 6 seeds per mound spaced 2.4 m apart. Once the seedlings have emerged, thin out to 3 plants per mound .

For a quicker start , seeds can be sown indoors 3 weeks before the last frost , in biodegradable pots to avoid transplant shock.

Harvesting and drying:

The fruits mature in 95 days . Harvest when the skin becomes firm and resistant to pressure . Avoid shock to prevent rot. Wash and dry in a warm, dry place, turning regularly to ensure even drying. A well-dried fruit will make the seeds jingle when shaken.

Use and special features:

Dried gourds can be carved, painted or varnished to create unique decorations. A wax glaze helps to better preserve their surface. Perfect for crafters and gardeners looking for originality!
