A Refined Leafy Green for the Vegetable Garden
Lamb's Lettuce Seeds (Valerianella locusta), offered by Semences OSC.
Lamb's lettuce, also known as lamb's lettuce, is a popular European salad green. Its dark green leaves form a low, delicate rosette, making it ideal for early harvest before flowering. Its mild, slightly nutty flavor is enhanced by a hint of jelly. This plant is perfect for cool climates, and its leaves can be blanched before harvest to reduce bitterness.
Spread: 10 cm per plant.
Plant height: 5-10 cm.
Quantity per pack: Approximately 900 seeds.
Companion plants: Lettuce, spinach, radishes.
Enemy plants: None notable.
How to Grow:
Direct sow seeds every two weeks in spring when soil temperatures are between 5 and 20°C. Sow 3mm deep and 6mm apart in rows 40cm apart. Thin to 10cm in the row for good development. Grow in a sheltered spot in full sun or light shade with deep, fertile soil. Once high summer temperatures are reached, lamb's lettuce bolts quickly. Germination takes about 10 days.
Easy to grow, lamb's lettuce prefers full sun and is resistant to light frost. Its leaves grow in compact rosettes, ready to harvest in 60 to 65 days. Sow directly into cool, moist soil for a continuous harvest.
