A Sweet and Versatile Leek
Leek 'Musselburgh' ( Allium ampeloprasum porrum ), offered by Semences OSC.
This heirloom variety, introduced in 1834, is a staple in European kitchens. With its elongated white stalks of 20 to 22.5 cm and a delicately sweet taste, the 'Musselburgh' leek is perfect for soups, stews, or even cooked en papillote. The plants, hardy and easy to grow, reach an impressive height of 50 to 100 cm, making them a decorative and tasty addition to your garden.
Plant height: 50 to 100 cm
Quantity per pack: Approximately 400 seeds (315 seeds/gram)
Companion plants: Carrots, celery, beets
Enemy plants: Peas, beans
Suggested Use: Soup, stew, slow-cooked dishes
Cultivation method:
For best success, start seedlings indoors between February and early March. Sow seeds 7mm deep in a soilless mix, and maintain a temperature of 20°C during germination. Once seedlings are about 20cm tall, transplant them outdoors in spring.
Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. You can also sow directly in the garden from April to June. Leeks grow best in full sun, in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Blanch the stems by earthing them up slightly as they grow for a tender, flavorful harvest.
Add a touch of elegance and sweetness to your table with the 'Musselburgh' leek, a variety that has proven itself for almost two centuries.
