Summer squash 'Long White Bush'
identification
description
Elongated white squash, tender and adapted to cooler climates
Summer squash “Long White Bush” ( Cucurbita pepo ), offered by OSC Seeds
A unique variety of marrow (vegetable pith), 'Long White Bush' produces long, creamy , almost cylindrical fruits with a slightly thicker floral tip. Their skin is generally smooth , but may occasionally have a few ridges. This squash performs particularly well during cool summers (daytime highs around 23°C, nighttime highs around 12°C), when the fruits grow larger. During prolonged periods of heat, the size tends to decrease. The plants are mostly bushy , although some may exhibit slight vine-like growth.
Propagation: Indoor sowing or direct sowing in late spring
Height/Habit: Bushy (sometimes semi-vine)
Package size: Approximately 20 seeds
Harvest time: 55–60 days
Frost tolerance: Killed by frost
Companion plants: Corn, beans, dill
Incompatible plants: Other squash varieties too close together (competition)
Planting and maintenance:
Sow when the soil is thoroughly warmed, or start seeds indoors 2–3 weeks before transplanting. Plant in full sun , in fertile, well-drained soil. Bush varieties take up less space than trailing varieties but benefit from good air circulation. Harvest the fruit young for a tender, sweet flavor. Water regularly to support production and prevent bitterness.
