'Perpetual' Spinach
identification
description
A robust, long-season, and very productive perennial spinach
Spinach “Perpetual” ( Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla ), offered by OSC Seeds
Although it belongs to the chard family , “Perpetual” closely resembles spinach in both flavor and appearance. And it lives up to its name: planted early, it provides tender , flavorful , and succulent leaves from spring until autumn , without bolting quickly. Introduced before 1800 , it is a heritage leafy vegetable, prolific and surprisingly robust , reaching 50 to 70 cm in height.
Propagation: Direct sowing (successive sowings every two weeks in cool weather)
Plant height: 50–70 cm
Package size: Approximately 150 seeds
Harvest time: 50–60 days
Frost tolerance: Frost resistant
Companion plants: Lettuce, radishes, green onions
Incompatible plants: Common spinach (to limit competition and common diseases)
Planting and maintenance:
Sow directly in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Sow regularly every two weeks to ensure a continuous harvest. Maintain evenly moderate moisture, especially at first. Cut back the outer leaves to encourage continuous regrowth. Highly cold-hardy, this cultivar extends the harvest later in the season than most traditional spinach varieties.
