Rosemary
A fragrant, robust Mediterranean herb that is indispensable in the kitchen.
Rosemary ( Salvia rosmarinus ), offered by OSC Seeds
Rosemary is a perennial herb with a woody, resinous fragrance, essential in roasted vegetable dishes, meats , breads , marinades , and Mediterranean recipes. Its woody stems and fine, evergreen leaves are rich in aromatic oils. Although naturally suited to warm climates, it can survive for several years in cooler areas when grown in very well-drained soil and a sunny location.
Propagation: Indoor sowing (slow germination)
Plant height: 60–100 cm
Package size: Approximately 100 seeds
Harvest time: 80–100 days (light harvests), more abundant in the second year
Frost tolerance: Hardy to zone 7 (zone 5–6 when potted and brought indoors for the winter)
Companion plants: Cabbage, carrots, beans
Incompatible plants: Mint (expansive), waterlogged soils
Type: Aromatic perennial
Planting and maintenance:
Sow the seeds on the surface , as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil slightly moist and warm ( 20–24°C ) — germination can take 15 to 25 days . Transplant to a sunny location in dry or sandy, very well-drained soil. Water moderately: rosemary dislikes overwatering. Prune lightly to encourage branching. In colder climates, grow in a pot and bring indoors for the winter.
