Tasty foliage and quick harvests in cooler seasons
'Viking' spinach ribbon (Spinacia oleracea) , offered by OSC Seeds
This heirloom spinach produces abundant, dark green, nutritious, savoy-shaped leaves. Introduced in 1933, it offers good heat tolerance and provides consistent harvests of both young shoots and mature leaves, in spring and late summer.
Propagation: By direct sowing
Plant height: 20–30 cm
Package size: Approximately 100 seeds
Harvest days: 20–50 days
Frost tolerance: Hardy frost
Companion plants: Lettuce, radish, peas
Incompatible plants: None known
Planting and maintenance:
Sow the seed tapes in a sunny location from early spring to early summer, and again in late summer when temperatures cool down. Lay the tape directly on the soil and cover it with 12 mm of soil. Space the rows 45 cm apart. Keep the soil evenly moist until germination, which occurs in 10 to 14 days. Thin to about 7.5 cm apart if necessary; the thinned seedlings are edible.
