Planting 'Russian Red' garlic
When to plant
Ideally in the autumn (September-October) for optimal root development before winter.
It can also be planted in spring (March-April) , but the bulbs will generally be smaller.
How to plant
Break the bulb into individual pods (without removing the skin).
Select the largest pods for planting , keep the smaller ones for cooking.
Plant the pods with the pointed end up , 3 inches (7-8 cm) deep and spaced 5 inches (12 cm) apart in rows 30 cm apart.
Use well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Add a mulch (straw or dead leaves) to protect from the cold in winter and retain moisture.
Culture and maintenance
Water regularly at the beginning of growth, then space out waterings as harvest approaches.
Remove the flower stalks (garlic flowers or "scapes") as soon as they appear to promote bulb growth.
Harvest when the foliage turns yellow and begins to dry, usually in July.
Carefully dig up the bulbs with a garden fork and let them dry in the shade for two weeks.
Gardening tip : Do not wash the bulbs after harvesting! Simply brush off the soil and store them in a cool, dry place.
