Organic 'Roman Chamomile' (Chamaemelum nobile) from the seed company Gaia, a perennial Roman chamomile with a sweet fragrance and medicinal uses

Roman chamomile forms a low, dense ground cover , composed of creeping stems with rhizomes that gradually spread to carpet the soil. The finely cut, soft green foliage releases a pleasant, soothing fragrance when brushed against, allowing the plant to withstand light foot traffic . Small white flowers with yellow centers appear above the foliage; they are more discreet than those of annual chamomile, but just as aromatic.

A perennial plant that can also self-seed , Roman chamomile possesses medicinal and therapeutic properties comparable to those of German chamomile, although it produces fewer flowers . It is traditionally used in herbal teas , calming preparations, and other herbal remedies. Its flowering attracts pollinators , while also providing a natural way to create fragrant and soothing areas in the garden, particularly under fruit trees or along borders.

Farming method

Sow the seeds 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost , either on the surface or 0.1 cm deep , as they need light to germinate . Germination occurs in 10 to 14 days , at an ideal temperature of around 18°C . Transplanting is recommended , but direct sowing is possible as soon as the soil is workable, keeping the soil slightly moist until emergence.

Roman chamomile prefers a sunny location (level 3) and light watering (level 1) . It adapts well to well-drained soils, even relatively poor ones, and establishes itself permanently once established.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the flowers when they are fully open , in dry weather. Four to five harvests per season are possible, depending on conditions. Dry the flowers on a screen , away from direct sunlight, stirring them regularly until completely dry. Then store them in airtight containers , away from light, to preserve their aromatic intensity.
