Organic 'South African Spiny Cucumber' Pickle
Organic 'South African Spiny Cucumber' (Cucumis zeyheri) from the seed company Gaia, an ornamental African variety with spiky fruit and citrus flavors
The 'South African Spiny Cucumber' develops long, vigorous, climbing vines that can reach nearly 2 meters in length , supported by medium-green foliage with a flexible, spreading habit. The oval to elliptical fruits, covered in small, soft spines , appear green at first before turning pale yellow when ripe. Their flesh is very dry , slightly peppery , with a citrusy flavor , which clearly distinguishes this variety from traditional cucumbers.
Native to South Africa, this annual plant is often cultivated as an ornamental , both for the decorative appearance of its fruit and its vigorous growth habit. It also has a long history of traditional food and medicinal use among indigenous peoples, adding significant ethnobotanical interest to its cultivation.

Sow 1 to 1.5 cm deep , directly outdoors 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost , when the soil has warmed up, or start the seeds indoors 4 weeks before planting out . Space plants 30 to 60 cm apart and rows 60 to 90 cm apart, in rich, loose, and well-drained soil .
This variety prefers full sun (level 3) and consistent watering (level 3) , especially during the active growth phase. A support or trellis can be used to enhance its climbing habit and facilitate harvesting.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest the fruit when its skin turns from green to light yellow , a sign of proper ripeness. It is possible to leave them to ripen longer on the vine until they develop a more pronounced yellow hue , at which point their aroma is most intense. Fresh fruit will keep for a few days in the refrigerator, but is best enjoyed freshly picked .
