Farming method
Sow directly in early spring when the soil is workable, or in late summer/early autumn in temperate climates. Flax prefers sandy, well-drained soil. Sow seeds 2.5–4 cm deep. If starting indoors (6 to 8 weeks before the last frost), handle with care: flax dislikes having its roots disturbed . Transplant into larger pots before the roots become entangled. Full sun (level 3), moderate watering (level 2). Space plants 15–20 cm apart, with 30–35 cm between rows. Germination takes 10–20 days at temperatures between 7–27°C (optimum 18–21°C).
Harvesting and preservation
To harvest the seeds , cut the stems when the seed pods turn brown and dry . Hang the bunches upside down in a well-ventilated area. Once dry, place the stems in a pillowcase and gently crush them with a rolling pin to release the seeds. Separate any debris by blowing it away with the wind or using a fan.
The seeds can be stored in an airtight container in a dry place.
