Organic 'Red Long of Florence' onion (Allium cepa) from the seed company Gaia, a long, sweet Italian red onion that's perfect fresh

The 'Red Long of Florence' onion is an Italian heritage variety recognizable by its long, slender bulbs topped with elegant green leaves . Its mild, delicately sweet flesh makes it an exceptional onion for eating fresh , raw salads, and pickles, although it doesn't store well and doesn't dry well in the field. Its elongated shape and bright red color add an elegant touch to both plates and freshly harvested bunches. A slow-maturing but very flavorful variety, it is ideal for those who prioritize taste over storage.

Farming method

Start sowing 10 to 12 weeks before transplanting. Sow at a depth of 3–6 mm . When the seedlings reach 12.5 cm , prune them back to 2.5 cm to encourage thickening of the stem. Transplant to a sunny location (level 3) with regular watering (level 3). Space plants 7–10 cm apart for medium-sized bulbs and 10–15 cm apart for larger bulbs. Leave 45–75 cm between rows. Germination takes 6–12 days at temperatures between 7–32°C , with an optimum of 20–25°C .

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the leaves have dried and fallen . Allow the bulbs to mature in the field for 3 to 5 days , or dry them in a greenhouse at 23–26°C and 80% humidity. As this variety does not store well, use it fresh or chill and dry it slowly to slightly prolong dormancy. It can be stored in a cellar at 0–1°C and 65–70% humidity.
