Organic 'Penis Pepper' Hot Chili (Capsicum annuum) from Gaia Seeds, an ancient chili with an unusual shape and mischievous heat

The 'Penis Pepper' chili, more politely called Peter Pepper, is an ancient variety famous for its surprisingly realistic phallic shape. This peculiarity has earned it a list of colorful nicknames like " Chilly Willy " or " Willy Chilly ", making it as much a horticultural curiosity as a true culinary chili. Its fruits measure 7.5 to 10 cm long, ripen from green to bright red (or yellow depending on the lineage), and develop a heat of 10,000 to 23,000 SHU, comparable to that of a mild serrano. Beneath the easy joke, it hides a rich, slightly fruity flavor and a pronounced heat. Uncommon, often grown for the anecdote, it is nonetheless an excellent chili for sauces, marinades, and salsas.

Gardener's anecdote: some say it's "the only pepper that watches you grow the vegetable garden"... but we can only confirm that it attracts a lot of amused conversations!

Cultivation method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting date, at about 6 mm deep in warm potting soil. Maintain a temperature of 27 to 31 °C to promote germination in 7 to 21 days. Harden off seedlings at 18–19 °C before transplanting into full sun (level 3). Water moderately (level 2). Space plants 30 to 45 cm apart, with 60 to 75 cm between rows. This variety appreciates heat and well-drained soil.

Harvest and storage

Harvest fruits when they reach their final color, bright red or yellow depending on the strain. Regular picking stimulates continuous production. Store at 10 to 12 °C with high humidity to maintain their firmness.
