The African marigold 'Cracker Jack' is an iconic heirloom variety producing large, abundant, and luminous double flowers in vibrant shades of yellow, gold, and orange . Its vigorous, upright plants can reach 75 to 90 cm (2.5 to 3') , adding height, texture, and color to any border or flower garden.
Easy to grow, heat resistant and with a long flowering period, it is also prized for its role as a companion plant : its roots exude natural compounds capable of repelling certain soil pests , making it an excellent ally for many vegetable crops.

The Indian marigold is not Indian at all: it originates from Mexico and Central America, where indigenous peoples used it as a medicinal, dyeing, and ritual plant . The Aztecs called it cempoalxochitl (flower with twenty petals) and considered it a solar flower , associated with rebirth and protection.
Even today, its petals are used to dye textiles , enrich chicken feed to produce more golden egg yolks, and as a spice or edible decoration in some traditional cuisines.

Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost . Lightly cover the seeds with soil 2.5 cm (1") deep or simply press them into the potting mix, covering them with a thin layer. Germination takes 7 to 10 days at 21–25 °C .
Transplant after all risk of frost has passed, in full sun ( level 3 ) and well-drained soil. Space plants 25 to 30 cm (10–12") apart, with 40 to 45 cm (16–18") between rows. Water moderately ( level 2 ).
Harvesting and preservation
Flowers can be picked for fresh or dried bouquets.
For optimal drying, hang them upside down in a dry, well-ventilated place.
The leaves and petals can be kept briefly in the refrigerator or can be dehydrated.
