Organic 'Creeping Thyme'
Organic 'Creeping Thyme' (Thymus serpyllum) from the seed company Gaia, a living, flowering, resilient, and essential aromatic ground cover for natural gardens
Creeping thyme ( Thymus serpyllum ) is a small, aromatic perennial that spreads into a dense carpet of soft, grey-green leaves with a delightful fragrance. Reaching only 2 to 3 inches in height , it weaves its way between stones, paving slabs, stepping stones, or along the edges of flowerbeds, creating a sturdy, elegant, and long-lasting ground cover.
From late spring to early summer, it is covered in a cloud of small lavender to pink flowers , irresistible to bees and butterflies. Drought-resistant, tolerant of light foot traffic, and very easy to care for, it is perfect as an alternative to lawn and a valuable resource for eco-friendly gardens. Its aromatic foliage can also be used in light cooking or in some traditional remedies.
Did you know that
In medieval Europe, creeping thyme was known as " the herb of courage ." Sprigs of thyme were often embroidered onto the scarves given to knights before battles, in the belief that its fragrance would inspire bravery and protection. Beyond its symbolic role, serpyllum thyme was also used to disinfect homes , scent wardrobes, and treat minor infections thanks to its antiseptic essential oils. Even today, it remains one of the most popular plants in natural gardens, supporting biodiversity and perfuming the air with its fragrance.

Farming method
The seeds must undergo cold stratification for 2 to 4 weeks . Then sow indoors 10 weeks before the last frost . Creeping thyme is sensitive to excess moisture: keep the potting mix slightly moist but never soggy. Cover the seeds with only a thin layer of potting mix ( 1/16" ). Germination is slow, between 14 and 28 days , ideally at 18°C (64°F) .
Transplant into well-drained soil in full sun ( level 3 ). Space plants 15 to 20 cm apart, with 30 to 45 cm between rows. Once established, it requires very little watering ( level 1 ).
Harvesting and preservation
Prune regularly to encourage dense, compact growth. Harvest the leaves or flowering tips in the morning , when the essential oils are at their peak.
Store fresh thyme for 1 to 2 weeks in the refrigerator, lightly wrapped. To dry, hang the sprigs in a dark, warm, and well-ventilated place .
