Organic 'Berkeley Tie Dye' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from Gaia seed company, a psychedelic Californian tomato with hypnotic marbling and rich flavor

The 'Berkeley Tie Dye' tomato, originating in California, is one of the most visually striking varieties in modern heirloom. Its fruits display a spectacular pattern of yellow-green stripes across a deep purplish-red skin, giving the impression of a hand-painted fruit. Inside, the flesh , marbled with red, green, and gold, reflects the same intensity, creating a unique tie-dye effect—hence its name.

Indeterminate and vigorous, it produces medium to large (6–10 cm) fleshy, juicy fruits with a complex flavor , a blend of fruity sweetness, bright acidity, and the aromatic depth characteristic of darker varieties. It has quickly become a favorite among gardeners and chefs seeking an exceptional tomato for both the plate and the garden.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost . Plant seeds 3–6 mm deep in light potting soil at 23–29 °C . Germination usually takes 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening-off to produce strong seedlings.

Transplant when the soil has warmed up and the risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60–90 cm (24–36") apart, with 120–180 cm (4–6') between rows. Provide full sun , regular watering (level 3) , and sturdy staking to support the heavy, abundant fruit.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the tie-dye colors are fully developed and the fruit becomes slightly soft. To get an earlier harvest, pick at the first sign of blush and then let the fruit ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store between 12–21°C , at 95% relative humidity , to preserve their juiciness and shine.
