Organic 'Gold Medal' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a majestic bicolor yellow and pinkish-red, sweet, fruity and of historical elegance

The 'Gold Medal' tomato is a spectacular heirloom variety, one of the most impressive of the large bicolored tomatoes. Introduced in 1921 as Ruby Gold by John Lewis Childs, and later renamed by the legendary collector Ben Quisenberry, this tomato embodies nearly a century of horticultural passion. Indeterminate and vigorous, it produces large, smooth fruits weighing 1 to 3 lbs , with a bright yellow skin marbled with a beautiful pinkish-red , creating a striking contrast both when cut and in the garden.

Its firm, sweet, mild, and slightly aromatic flesh makes it an ideal tomato for refreshing dishes, thick slices, elegant salads, and heirloom tomato platters. Capable of transforming any dish into a centerpiece, 'Gold Medal' impresses as much with its beauty as with its delicate and balanced flavor profile.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting . Plant seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix. Maintain a temperature between 23 and 29 °C for germination in 5 to 10 days . During hardening off, reduce watering and nitrogen to encourage strong seedlings.

Transplant outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24–36") apart, with 120 to 180 cm (4–6') between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) , regular watering (level 3) , and install very sturdy supports , essential for supporting the large fruit.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruits are fully yellow/pink and sweet. To get an early harvest, pick tomatoes that have just begun to color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store them at 12–21°C , under 95% humidity , to maintain their firm texture.
