Organic 'Ponderosa Pink' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a majestic pink steak inherited from the 19th century, sweet, meaty and perfect for slicing

The 'Ponderosa Pink' tomato, cultivated well before 1870 and popularized by Henderson's, is a grande dame of horticultural heritage. Indeterminate and vigorous, it produces very large, soft pink fruits , ranging from 500g to 1kg , which ripen late in the season and are among the true classic steak tomatoes. Its flesh is thick, sweet, low in acid, and remarkably flavorful, with very few seeds—an ideal profile for thick slices, gourmet sandwiches, and heirloom tomato platters. Although susceptible to cracking, it more than makes up for this with the exceptional quality of its fruit and its luscious texture.

Ripening in approximately 85 days , 'Ponderosa Pink' offers a moderate but high-quality yield, true to its reputation as an authentic heirloom variety. Its rosy beauty, delicate aroma, and generous flavor make it an essential tomato for gardeners and cooks seeking a rich and traditional taste experience.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Insert seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix. Maintain a temperature of 23–29°C to encourage rapid germination in 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening off to produce strong seedlings that will better withstand vigorous growth.

Transplant once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36") apart with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6') between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) , regular watering (watering level 3) , and very sturdy staking , essential for supporting its often enormous fruit.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit displays its beautiful, uniform pink hue. To get a head start, pick those that are showing their first signs of color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store them between 12 and 21°C with 95% relative humidity to preserve their tender flesh.
