Organic 'Scatalone' Tomato
Organic 'Scatalone' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a magnificent Italian-style tomato with a rich aroma and abundant flesh.
The 'Scatalone' tomato is a semi-late heirloom variety, originating from the style of large, fleshy Italian tomatoes, similar to the famous San Marzano from Lazio. Indeterminate, vigorous, and extremely productive, it yields long, elongated red tomatoes, rich in pulp and remarkably flavorful. Their dense flesh, low in seeds, and beautifully smooth texture make them an exceptional candidate for sauces, pastes, or slow cooking. Enormous and refined, it embodies all the character of traditional Italian tomatoes, with this fascinating characteristic: ripening from the inside out, ensuring a uniform texture and a perfectly developed flavor.
'Scatalone' is a true find for gardeners looking to grow one of the best San Marzano-type tomatoes available. Its indeterminate growth habit allows it to produce abundantly throughout the season, while its deep, slightly sweet, and full-bodied flavor evokes homemade sauces simmered for hours. A variety that transports you straight to Italian kitchens, where the tomato reigns supreme.

Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Plant the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix and maintain a temperature of 23–29°C for rapid germination in 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening off to produce strong seedlings ready for transplanting.
Transplant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) and regular watering (watering level 3) . Due to its vigorous growth habit and abundant production of heavy fruit, provide sturdy staking to support the plant throughout the season.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest when the fruit has turned a deep red and the flesh is fully developed. To get an early harvest, pick tomatoes that have begun to color , then let them ripen at 22°C or higher off the vine. Store them between 12 and 21°C with 95% relative humidity to protect their texture and flavor.
