Organic 'Whippersnapper' Tomato
Organic 'Whippersnapper' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, an early cherry variety, drooping and ideal for growing in pots
The 'Whippersnapper' tomato is an ultra-early heirloom variety renowned for its abundant production of small, pear-shaped, red cherry tomatoes. Sweet, slightly tangy, and very juicy, they are perfect for snacking on straight from the garden or adding to fresh salads. Its distinctive feature is its naturally trailing habit, ideal for growing in pots, window boxes, or even under lights in a gallon pot during the winter. An indeterminate variety, it fruits continuously and offers a remarkable yield despite its compact size.

Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds 3 to 6 mm (1/8 to 1/4") deep in light potting mix. Maintain a temperature between 23 and 29°C for optimal germination (5 to 10 days). Slightly reduce watering and nitrogen application during hardening-off to strengthen the seedlings before transplanting.
Transplant into the garden, or into a deep container, once all risk of frost has passed. Space the plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36") apart in the ground, or let them trail freely in a pot. Provide full sun (level 3) and consistent watering (watering level 3). Light staking can be helpful, but its trailing habit also allows it to be grown without vertical support.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest the fruit when it has developed a deep red color. For an earlier harvest, pick them when they begin to turn pink, then let them finish ripening at 22°C or higher off the vine. Store the tomatoes between 12 and 21°C, in a relative humidity of around 95%.
