Organic 'Wildling Panamorous' tomato
Organic 'Panamorous Wildling' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a wild and unpredictable line for gardeners and breeders
The 'Panamorous Wildling' tomato is a fascinating interspecies hybrid , the result of the work of breeder Joseph Lofthouse , renowned for his landrace tomato projects aimed at creating resilient , genetically diverse seeds adapted to participatory breeding . This cross between domestic tomatoes and wild species ( Solanum habrochaites and Solanum pennellii ) has given rise to an extraordinarily variable population : leaf shapes , fruit colors (green, pink, red, yellow, orange, white, purple), and sizes ranging from cherry to saladette . The plants themselves vary from dwarf to giant , with determinate , semi-determinate , or indeterminate growth habits, offering a veritable playground for amateur breeders .
This extreme diversity allows for the emergence of plants potentially resistant to mildew , climatic stresses , or drought . Irregular germination is an integral part of this variety's appeal, making it ideal for gardeners who wish to observe and select the individuals best adapted to their soil , develop their own line , or experiment with wild and robust traits .
Companion plants: Basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, pepper, dill (until mature)
Negative plants: Potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash
Spread/carry: Highly variable ( determinate , semi-determinate or indeterminate )
Plant height: 60 to 90 cm, but highly variable
Quantity per packet: 25 seeds
Certification: Certified organic by Ecocert Canada
Special features: Interspecies hybrid , extreme genetic diversity , potential for natural resistance , ideal for home breeding
Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost in a light potting mix , at a depth of 3 to 6 mm . Germination usually occurs in 5 to 10 days , but genetic variability may lead to staggered emergence , which is normal and desirable. Maintain a temperature of 23 to 29°C . During hardening-off, reduce watering and nitrogen application to obtain stronger, more self-sufficient plants.
Transplant when nighttime temperatures exceed 10°C . Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart and rows 120 to 180 cm apart. Given the potential for indeterminate growth , staking is recommended. Provide full sun (level 3) and regular watering (level 3) .
Maturity varies between individuals, generally between 70 and 80 days .
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest when the fruit has fully developed its color , whatever that color may be. The fruit can also be picked at the beginning of its color development and allowed to ripen outside the vineyard at 22°C or higher . Store between 12 and 21°C , with high relative humidity .
