Organic 'Wisconsin 55' Tomato
Organic 'Wisconsin 55' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a classic and robust variety for cool climates
The 'Wisconsin 55' tomato is an iconic heirloom variety, developed by the University of Wisconsin to perform exceptionally well in regions with short summers and cooler temperatures. Highly productive, it produces medium to large, round, smooth, red fruits with a sweet, slightly tart flavor. Resistant to cracking and reliable even in challenging growing conditions, it is especially popular with northern gardeners. Although often described as determinate in origin, the Gaia selection indicates an indeterminate growth habit, ensuring continuous production throughout the season.
Its versatile fruits are ideal for fresh consumption, canning, sauces, and sandwich slices.

Farming method
Sow the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Place them 3 to 6 mm (1/8 to 1/4") deep in a light potting mix. Maintain a temperature of 23 to 29°C for optimal germination in 5 to 10 days. During hardening off, slightly reduce watering and nitrogen application to encourage stronger seedlings.
Once all risk of frost has passed, transplant outdoors. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart in rows 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) apart. Provide full sun (level 3), rich soil, and regular watering (watering level 3). Due to its indeterminate growth habit, sturdy staking is necessary to support prolonged production.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest the fruit when it has fully turned red to enjoy its optimal flavor. You can also pick the fruit when it begins to turn pink and let it finish ripening off the vine at 22°C or higher. Store the tomatoes in a temperate environment, between 12 and 21°C, with a relative humidity of around 95%.
