Organic 'Yellow Pear' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, an old variety with pear-shaped yellow fruits

The 'Yellow Pear' tomato is a heritage variety dating back to the 1700s, renowned for its small, bright yellow, pear-shaped fruits. Sweet, juicy, and low in acidity, these tomatoes are ideal for snacking on straight from the garden or adding to colorful salads. They are particularly prolific: a single plant can produce hundreds of fruits throughout the season. Thanks to its indeterminate growth habit and vigorous growth, this variety continues to produce as long as it receives sufficient warmth and light.

Its bright flavor and charming appearance make it a favorite with amateur gardeners, children, and cooks looking to add a visual and gustatory touch to their dishes.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the expected date of the last frost. Plant 3 to 6 mm (1/8 to 1/4") deep in a light potting mix. Maintain a temperature between 23 and 29°C for optimal germination in 5 to 10 days. During hardening off, slightly reduce watering and nitrogen application to strengthen the seedlings.

Transplant outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart in rows 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) apart. Full sun (level 3) and regular watering (level 3) promote optimal growth. As this is an indeterminate variety, sturdy staking is necessary.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the fruit when it has its characteristic yellow color and shiny skin. For optimal flavor development, harvest at full maturity. Alternatively, the fruit can be picked when it begins to yellow slightly and left to ripen completely off the vine at 22°C or higher.

Store tomatoes between 12 and 21 °C, in a relative humidity of approximately 95%.
