Malawi Brown Bean Mix, certified organic seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris)
Phaseolus vulgaris
Malawi Brown Bean Mix, certified organic seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris) This mix brings together brown bean varieties traditionally grown in Malawi and valued for adapting to warm sunny conditions. Gaia highlights their rich flavour and versatility in bean stews and relishes. Annual open-pollinated plants reach approximately 12 to 24 inches high. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds certified organic by Ecocert Canada. Kew recognizes Phaseolus vulgaris as an accepted species in the Fabaceae family. The compact habit makes this mix easy to place in sunny rows, edible beds, and large containers while keeping pods accessible throughout maturity.
Direct sow after the last frost once soil has warmed. Place seeds 1 to 2 inches deep and 3 to 4 inches apart, with approximately 24 inches between rows. A temperature of 21 to 30°C, preferably around 26°C, supports emergence in 8 to 10 days. Grow in full sun and loose fertile well-drained soil. Water regularly without saturating the ground, especially during flowering and pod development. Sow at three-week intervals for a longer harvest where at least 70 to 90 frost-free days remain. Weed gently around young plants, water at soil level, and avoid excessive nitrogen that promotes foliage instead of flowers and pods.
Wait until pods and beans are fully mature and dry. Harvest before an extended rainy period, finish drying under cover with good airflow, and shell the crisp pods. Store thoroughly dried beans in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry place. Before eating, soak the beans, discard the soaking water, and cook completely in fresh water until tender. Never consume raw or undercooked beans. Their rich flavour suits fully cooked stews, relishes, soups, and other comforting bean dishes. Remove damaged or damp beans before storage and clearly label seed reserved for future sowing so it remains separate from the culinary harvest.
