Organic 'Pink Beauty' soapwort (Saponaria vaccaria) from the seed company Gaia, a dusty pink star, soft, airy and traditional for rustic gardens

Soapwort 'Pink Beauty' is a graceful and luminous flowering plant, prized for its powdery pink stars borne on slender stems. Reaching 60 to 90 cm (24–36") , it creates a light and airy effect in borders, perfect for complementing structured perennials like echinaceas or for softening edges. Prolific in cooler weather , it continues to thrive in the summer heat thanks to its hardiness and drought tolerance once established.
Its flowers, with their simple and old-fashioned charm, are also prized as cut flowers , adding a touch of romance to natural bouquets.

Did you know that

Soapwort derives its name from the Latin word sapo , meaning " soap ." Since ancient times, its flowers and leaves have been used as a natural foaming agent thanks to the saponins they contain. Medieval laundresses used it to clean delicate fabrics, particularly wool and fine fibers that were impossible to wash with the harsh soaps of the time.
Even today, some varieties of soapwort are used in the artisanal production of shampoos, mild soaps and traditional laundry detergents , and their dried flowers serve as ingredients in purifying herbal teas and ancient remedies.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost (mid-March). Transplant outdoors at the end of May , after all risk of frost has passed. Seeds can be sown 6 mm (1/4") deep in well-drained soil, in sun or partial shade ( level 2 ).

Space the plants 30 cm (12") apart, with 60 to 90 cm (24–36") between rows. Germination takes 10 to 14 days , ideally at 18 to 24 °C . Water moderately ( level 2 ). Soapwort tolerates temperatures down to -9 °C .

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the flowers when they are fully open for optimal fragrance and to take advantage of their soapy properties.
Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming.

Dry the flowers and leaves in a dark, cool, and well-ventilated place.
Then store them in airtight containers , away from light.
