Organic 'Strawflower' scabious (Scabiosa stellata) from the seed company Gaia, an ethereal, textured and magical floral star for fresh and dried bouquets

Scabiosa stellata, nicknamed " pincushion flower ," is a delicate annual that first enchants with its pale blue and white flowers , resembling tiny stars perched on slender stems. But it is after flowering that it reveals its true magic: its seed heads evolve into translucent, cream-colored globes , each cup bearing a dark star at its center. As they mature, these structures turn beige and then black, gaining in texture and sophistication—a treasure for dried bouquets, modern floral arrangements, and artistic compositions.

A light, graceful plant that is much appreciated by pollinators, it reseeds itself easily and offers a unique charm to the garden, both for its flowering and for its sculptural seed heads.

Did you know that

The name Scabiosa comes from the Latin word scabies , meaning " scabies ," because its ancestors were once used in traditional medicine to relieve skin diseases and irritations . As for stellata , it means " starry ": a direct nod to the almost celestial geometric shapes of the seed heads.
These "dried stars" were once kept in homes as good luck charms , symbolizing protection and guidance — a tradition still present in some Mediterranean villages.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost . Cold stratification (light refrigeration) improves germination. Cover the seeds only very lightly. Keep at 18–24 °C ; germination takes 7 to 14 days .

Transplant the seedlings after all risk of frost has passed, into full sun ( level 3 ), in well-drained soil . Space them 30 to 45 cm (12–18") apart, with 45 to 90 cm (18–36") between rows. Remove faded flowers to prolong blooming.

Harvesting and preservation

Cut the fresh flowers as soon as they are open for delicate bouquets.
For seed heads, wait until they turn cream to light brown before cutting: this will help them retain their perfect shape once dried.

Hang them in a dry, dark and well-ventilated place. They will keep for several years without losing their star-shaped structure.
