Viburnum cassinoides
Viburnum cassinoides, commonly known as Witherod Viburnum, is a native deciduous shrub particularly valued for its ecological benefits and extended seasonal interest. It develops a dense, bushy habit, typically wider than it is tall, forming a natural mass ideal for hedgerows and biodiversity-friendly landscaping. In spring, abundant corymbs of creamy-white flowers appear, attracting pollinators. These are followed by remarkable fruit production: clusters of berries that transition from pink to blue and then to black at maturity, often present simultaneously, and highly prized by birds. Its medium green foliage transforms into vibrant purplish-red hues in autumn. Adapted to cool to moist and well-drained soils, Viburnum cassinoides is an excellent choice for northern naturalistic gardens.
